Format Info: PDC Pauper Deck Challenge... Only the Commons, All the Fun!
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:26:19 PM »

What is PDC Magic?   Pauper Deck Challenge (PDC) is the most accesible Constructed format there is: all-commons Magic. In PDC, all noncommons are banned. This means no rares, no uncommons and no timeshifted cards; only cards with a black expansion symbol are allowed.  Our PDC Magic League should have something to satisfy everyone. It has all the fun and competition, but the decks are a lot easier (inexpensive) to put together.

Here are a couple of links for those of you ready to delve even deeper into the world of PDC:

PDC FAQ: http://pdcmagic.com/faq/index.shtml#2-1

Basic Rules:

The PDC Legality Rule: A card is legal in a PDC format if it is a common in that format.

For example, the PDC Standard card pool consists of cards that are common in a Standard set (at the moment : Tenth Edition, Lorwyn Block, & Shards Block). This means that Nantuko Husk is not PDC Standard legal even though it is Standard legal (being in Tenth Edition) and is a common in Onslaught, since it only appears as an uncommon in Standard.

Applied to the Classic format, this rule implies that the Classic PDC format consists of all the cards that have appeared as a common at some time.

Is there a banned or a restricted list in PDC?

Yes. Cranial Plating & Armadillo Cloak are banned.

I just wanted to put in my two cents about the formats...

I am definitely more down for Standard PDC.  It appears to be a reasonably popular formats with pdc scene on Magic Online (PDCMagic seems to hold about 8 standard events each month).

It is a reasonably small format (about as many available cards as say block constructed), so you can get a better metagame view.  On the other hand, the format won't be as diverse as vintage pdc.

The biggest advantage however is that it should be reasonably easy to get any of the individual cards (as opposed to probe, firebolt, hymn etc.).  You get to enjoy the power of constructed with the least amount of overhead needed to build exactly the deck you want.  I bet this would help a lot for those of us who have small collections but want to experience constructed competition without spending $$$ on singles... whereas I am sure the shop could provide access to Standard common singles for just ¢¢¢.

That is the motivation behind us doing PDC, yeah.  It's also the reason why, for at least the time being, we'll be doing the Classic format, since it doesn't limit casual players who might have only older cards.

I think this will be a fun style of play for everyone as well.  Can someone please clarify what rules we will be starting at, for example standard(10th and up), or extended (just about everything).  Also, is there a specific list of ALL the cards that will not be allowed, I do not want to make a deck and have some of them be restricted/banned.

To start with, we'll be running Classic format, in which any card that has ever been common in any set is legal.  The only banned cards are Cranial Plating and Armadillo Cloak.
